HeartWare™ Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD™) System – Update regarding HVAD power source management and Autologs feature

A Dear Healthcare Professional Letter has been issued by Medtronic International Limited, as a follow-up to their earlier communications in January 2021, July 2021, March 2022, October 2022, February 2023 and August 2023, regarding the HeartWare™ Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD™) System, to update healthcare professionals on the following:

(1) Patient management recommendations around power source management: Prior to restarting a stopped pump, clinicians are recommended to connect a controller AC adapter to the controller. If a controller AC adapter is unavailable, two fully or partially charged batteries are to be connected as soon as possible during any pump restart attempt. Healthcare professionals are advised to perform controller exchanges in a clinical setting unless directed by a high priority alarm or by their VAD clinical team.

(2) Autologs and HVADlogs: New information regarding motor start events has been added to the Autologs and HVADlogs reports, providing additional data for patient management considerations. Healthcare professionals are advised to upload the controller logfiles to Medtronic for further review.

Please refer to the letter for details.
